How to plan a walk

Upper Manhattan's gallery and museum landscape needs a multi-step plan. Start with the Met or the Guggenheim on Fifth Avenue (the 4/5/6 to 86th Street). Walk south through Madison Avenue's 64th-80th gallery row. Then take the 4/5/6 north to 116th for El Museo del Barrio, or to 125th for the Studio Museum in Harlem. Plan a full day — six to eight hours — with lunch.

Frequently asked

What museums are in Harlem?

El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Avenue) and the Studio Museum in Harlem (144 W 125th Street, currently in a renovated building) are the two major museums in the area. Both program contemporary exhibitions year-round.

Are there commercial galleries in Harlem?

How do I plan an Upper Manhattan gallery day?

Start at the Met or the Guggenheim, walk the Madison Avenue gallery row from 78th to 64th Street, then take the 4/5/6 north to El Museo del Barrio or the Studio Museum in Harlem. Full day with lunch is about six to eight hours.

What subway goes to Upper East Side galleries?

The 4/5/6 along Lexington — Hunter College (68th), 77th Street, and 86th Street stops put you in the heart of the gallery row. The Q to 72nd or 86th Second Avenue is faster from Midtown.
