Liu Bolin, the Invisible Man, returns to Paris

A major figure in contemporary art, Liu Bolin is coming back to Paris this autumn: the Danysz Gallery is dedicating an exhibition to him that explores the diversity of his work. The Chinese artist, known as the “Invisible Man,” returns to the capital with an exceptional show that reveals the many facets of his artwork.

While Liu Bolin has gained worldwide recognition through his photographic performances, in which he blends into carefully painted settings to disappear from the viewer’s gaze, the exhibition also highlights other facets of his practice. Born in 1973 in Shandong, China, Liu Bolin is internationally recognized for his spectacular photographic performances in which he blends into his surroundings by painting himself and his clothing until he vanishes into the background. Nicknamed the “Invisible Man,” he has, since the early 2000s, developed a body of work that questions the place of the individual in a society saturated with images and signs.

His works have been presented in the most prestigious institutions worldwide. In recent years, Liu Bolin has notably held major exhibitions at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles (2023), the MOCA Shanghai (2022), the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark (2021), and the Museum of Photography in Seoul (2020).

His work is part of numerous international public and private collections, including the Minsheng Art Museum (Shanghai), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Buenos Aires, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto.

Through his performances, installations, and sculptures, Liu Bolin continues to explore the tensions between visibility and erasure, individual identity and global society, making him one of the most significant artists in today’s contemporary art scene.
