Isla Hansen

Three Four Three Four is pleased to present Play Dead, a solo exhibition by Isla Hansen. Play Dead consists of three speculative systems for infinite rounds of sudden-death. This impossible scenario occurs by taking "Game" as tool and reference point, not as infrastructure or rule. The resulting laboratory proposes the tactility of synthetic bodies as erotic subterfuge for revealing an absence left by technological systems for tracking and positioning the body.

During her recent residency as visiting artist at UCLA Game Lab, David O’Grady described Hansen’s work as such: Hansen’s Rube Goldberg-like installations often transmute the commercial hype of new gadgets and devices into spectacles of technology to reveal the power—and problems—of technology as an embodied medium.

Recipient of the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship and recent UCLA Game Lab visiting artist, Isla Hansen currently resides somewhere around New York, working out of her Brooklyn studio. She received her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2015 and her BA from Columbia University in 2010. Isla’s solo and collaborative work has been exhibited at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, MOCA Cleveland, the Miller Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Back Yard Projects NYC, and the LeRoy Neiman Gallery in New York.
