Tal Yerushalmi

We are pleased to present Tal Yerushalmi upcoming solo show, Rock, Paper, Scissors, at Gordon Gallery New York.

After feeling that the images in her previous works began to dissolve and destabilize, Yerushalmi embarked on this series. Experimenting with new imagery, she translated found objects—scissors, flowers, bones—into her own visual language.

These works are trials, experiments, and quick exercises that mark a new chapter in her practice. They explore objects and the potential encounters, relationships, and tensions between them.

The series features works on paper, smaller in scale than Yerushalmi’s usual work. The paper remains an active presence, peeking through brushstrokes, and at times, its absence forms the image itself through negative space.

In earlier works, Yerushalmi depicted fire, later making it literal by burning the canvas itself. Here, she moves from physically cutting into the painting’s surface to representing cutting tools and acts—suggested but not yet realized. The fragile stems of blooming flowers are threatened by the sharp blades of the scissors — creating a sense of movement and impending action.
