Over The Hills

Hometown is pleased to present Over The Hills.

Staged during summer, a time characterized by a sense of wandering, departure and renewal, Over the Hills features artworks that engage states beyond the normal. Visions of impossible landscapes, past events reimagined as personal myth, and journeys inward provide a break from reality and the everyday, an indulgence that may ultimately lead to a clearer perception of the real upon return. The remote subject matter of these works also serves as a metaphor of summer as a fleeting period known mainly through anticipation, on the one hand, and memory on the other—this liminal relationship makes the season and its potential all the more elusive.

Christopher Astley lives and works in New York, NY. His work has been exhibited at venues including Sargent’s Daughters, New York, NY; Leo Koenig, New York, NY; Martos Gallery, New York, NY; BravinLee, New York, NY; The Margulies Collection, Miami, FL; Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL; and the Contemporary Art Museum, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL. His work was recently the subject of a solo exhibition at Tracy Williams, Ltd., New York, NY.

Joshua Hagler lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. His work has been exhibited at venues including JAUS Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Hometown, Brooklyn, NY; Brandstater Gallery, La Sierra University, Riverside, CA; Avis Frank Gallery, Houston, TX; Oxholm Gallery, Copenhagen, DK; and Frey Norris Gallery, San Francisco, CA. His 2015–16 body of work The Adopted was the subject of a recent traveling solo exhibition presented in Riverside, CA and Los Angeles, CA.

Andrea Joyce Heimer lives and works in Ferndale, WA and Manchester, NH. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Castlefield Gallery, Manchester, UK; Lindsay Gallery, Columbus, OH; The Good Luck Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; idrawalot Collective, Berlin, DE; Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle, WA; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, DK; and Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York, NY. Her work will be the subject of a forthcoming solo exhibition at Antonio Columbo Gallery in Milan, Italy.

Meredith Sands lives and works in New York, NY. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Judith Charles Gallery, New York, NY; University Club, Chicago, IL; Thomas Masters Gallery, Chicago IL; LeRoy Neiman Gallery, Columbia University, New York, NY; Wallach Gallery, Columbia University, New York, NY; and Stairway Studios, Chicago, IL. Sands recently earned her MFA in painting from Columbia University, New York, NY; and received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL.

Michael Uttaro lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been exhibited at venues including New Age Drinks Gallery, Jerome, AZ; Hometown, Brooklyn, NY; Bronx Art Space, Bronx, NY; Hunter College Art Gallery, New York, NY; and Giacobetti Paul Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. Uttaro recently earned his MFA from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY; and received his BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, NY.

Elmar Vestner lives and works in Berlin, DE. His work has been exhibited at venues including CJ Art Studio, Cheongju, KR; Galerie September, Berlin, DE; Hometown, Brooklyn, NY; Galerie Mikael Andersen, Berlin, DE; Galerie Ditrich & Schlectriem, Berlin, DE; Galerie Gerhardsen Gerner, Oslo, NOR; and Kunsthaus Bethanien, Berlin, DE. His work will be the subject of a forthcoming solo exhibition at PhotoforumPasquArt in Biel, Switzerland.

August Vollbrecht lives in Brooklyn, NY, and works in New York, NY. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Judith Charles Gallery, New York, NY; Hometown, Brooklyn, NY; Fisher Landau Center for Art, Long Island City, NY; and Oddfellows Gallery, Mendocino, CA. Vollbrecht earned her MFA in painting from Columbia University, New York, NY; and her BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Providence, RI.

Hometown is a Brooklyn-based contemporary art gallery that collaborates with emerging and mid-career artists. Founded by Adam Yokell, Hometown exists to encourage public and critical awareness on a global scale for exhibiting artists.
