Silt, sediment, what remains is often most potent - a distillation. The title of Peter Doyle’s annex show speaks to the erosion he sees running throughout the work presented here.

“I wanted the paintings to feel set in a familiar space, somewhere between work and home,” says the Irish artist. “The scenes have a slightly surreal quality, with figures that appear introspective, like strangers sharing the same environment. It’s the kind of setting that anyone might recognise themselves in at one time or another.”

While some of the interiors resemble a bar or pub, the setting could also be a musician sitting quietly in a corner, or small groups trying to carve out a private exchange over a drink at a friend’s apartment They’re separate, strangers if you will. but occupying the same social space. Doyle cites the book “Paparazzo - The Elio Sorei Collection” as inspiration for many of the character’s poses, making these pictures “stolen moments,” both figuratively and at their origin.
