I recently remarked to some out of town visitors after a trip to Dia Beacon, "It's much harder to see the art that isn't there." Which is what all art is about. When Monya suggested I "curate" a show for her gallery, I suggested the title "Absent Friends." The audience which artists aspire to, those who are no longer here or perhaps never were. -Paul Schrader, 2014, New York
Paul Schrader is an American filmmaker and screenwriter. His screenplays for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are among the most celebrated of all-time. Some of his work as a director includes Blue Collar, American Gigolo, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Light Sleeper and Affliction.
About Monya Rowe Gallery
About the gallery Monya Rowe opened her first 200 square-foot space on the south side of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2003. Roberta Smith of The New York Times reviewed the first exhibition and called the gallery "possibly the smallest white cube in the New York art world". After just 8 months in Brooklyn the gallery relocated to Chelsea, Manhattan for 10 years.
