Galerie Mitterrand is pleased to present a group show curated by Barbara Newman, (collector and curator based between New York and Paris) featuring works by Corinna Gosmaro, Mariana Oushiro, Andrew Sendor, Chibuike Uzoma, Scott Young, and Monsieur Zohore. The exhibition spans the two gallery spaces; in the front gallery space will be presented the first solo show of Brazilian artist Mariana Oushiro; in the second gallery space, a group show featuring the works of artists based in Europe and the United States.

By selecting artists whose creative medium is paint, Barbara Newman invites us to see “the body” as bridge between works that, at first glance, appear very different stylistically. From abstract to figurative, trompe l’oeil to hyper-realism, from gestural painting to performance art, the field of investigation offered here is vast, and reflects the diversity of artistic practices today. This exhibition brings together different approaches and prospective from artists of different cultural background to form a new and complex framework. From re-envisioning of still life and vanitas paintings where we perceive objects and motifs with contentious social significance to questioning the intentions behind celebration, satisfaction and authenticity of today’s spectacle-objecting culture, dialogues are formed to express reflections on the human being as a global cultural entity.

Citing phenomenology theoretician Maurice Merleau-Ponty: “In the cultural object, I feel the close presence of others beneath a veil of anonymity. Someone uses the pipe for smoking, the spoon for eating, the bell for summoning, and it is through the perception of a human act and another person that the perception of a cultural world can be verified.”1 Newman explains: “The self and perception are encompassed in a physical body. Therefore, the physical body is a part of the self. The body is a constitutive or transcendental principle; that is, it is involved in the very possibility of any experience. Our relations with the world, with others, and with ourselves have their origin in corporeal experience.”

Distorting the boundaries of the body, the artists featured in The World Is Wholly Inside, and I Am Wholly Outside Myself investigate the limits of representation and question the elusiveness of visual imagination.

Mariana Oushiro’s pictorial language is rooted in the choreography of movement and shaped by the artist’s ability to remain exquisitely in tune with her own subconscious. Her gestural marks are powerful but intimate, with the flow of each stroke revealing a simultaneously cerebral and intuitive approach to line, colour, and composition. Oushiro draws inspiration from elements of the natural world and her belief in a higher natural order. In conjuring her paintings, she draws upon her impressions of the topographies of agricultural landscapes in Brazil, the sensation of buoyancy in water, sacred geometries, architecture, and science. Her family’s heritage, originating in Japan and Brazil, informs her philosophical and aesthetic frameworks, and has shaped the development of her artistic language as an idiom of abstraction.

Mariana Oushiro received her Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts from the Faculdade Santa Marcelina-FASM, São Paulo, in 2014. She then studied in New York at the Minerva Studio in 2016, and at The Art Students League of New York in 2019, where she was granted the Merit Scholarship. She had her first institutional solo exhibition at the Museum de Arte Brasileira in 2023, and two solo shows at Vito Schnabel Gallery in 2022 and 2023. Her works have been included in numerous exhibitions, including the Every Women Biennial at LaMaMa Galleria in New York, USA (2019), Private Exhibition, curated by Annie Wang, in Tribeca, New York, USA (2018), and Moveis Brasil, at the Pinheiros in São Paulo, Brazil (2017).
