Srijon Chowdhury

Ciaccia Levi is pleased to present The Whorled, Srijon Chowdhury's fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. The title plays on the spiral patterns found in petals, leaves, and galaxies, while suggesting a distorted, turning world—reflecting how Chowdhury treats painting as a system of correspondences where symbols move freely between the everyday and the mythical. Dense fields of flowers build into hallucinatory surfaces. Sunbursts and cosmic orbs recall Blake's visions. Unicorns and horses carry human figures across grass. Portraits of family and lovers are tender but strange, grounding big archetypal ideas in actual intimacy. Sunflowers rise and bow with time. These paintings move between the symbolic and the sensual, between cosmic scale and close detail, pulling from Tarot archetypes and private memory alike. They suggest the world itself is whorled—layered, spiraling, constantly turning—and invite viewers into a cycle of revelation, intimacy, and return.

Srijon Chowdhury (b. 1987, Dhaka) lives in Portland, OR. The subjects depicted in Srijon Chowdhury’s canvases are often portraits of loved ones, whose intimacy and vulnerability is explored through dark tones and bright hints. Recalling suggestions from French Symbolism, medieval tapestry, and American painting of the 1930s, Chowdhury’s canvases are invitations to reflect on the nature and emotions of what it is to be human.
