Ana Cláudia Almeida

Stephen Friedman Gallery is pleased to present Over Again, Ana Cláudia Almeida's first solo exhibition in New York. This brings together a site-specific installation, new fabric works and large-scale paintings.

Through her multifaceted practice, Almeida seeks to resist and disrupt the hegemonic imposition of social systems of religion, gender and sexuality, over both the human body and nature. Raised in a religious household as the daughter of a pastor, near the lush natural landscapes of Rio de Janeiro she is fueled by a “need to break patterns that no longer serve us, in the mind, in the body, in space, in everyday life,” says Almeida. This history deeply informs her practice.

The artist elaborates, stating “my work has a lot to do with experiencing life. In that case, my life has particularities, as any other: where I grew up, the places I lived, the people I have met, the society in which I am inscribed. And somehow, all of this goes into the work, there is no way to avoid it [...] I talk of rivers, of cities, of religion, and of whatever because I am living and experiencing these things.”
