Ryan Cosbert & Emmanuel Massillon

Galerie Julien Cadet is pleased to present the exhibition Only Time Will Tell featuring the work of two American artists: Emmanuel Massillon and Ryan Cosbert. They are linked by a common source of inspiration: the history and culture of African Americans and the African diaspora. The artists are not interested in a romanticized interpretation of these stories, but rather in the events that occurred and people who took part of it: the first African American man to go into space, the story of Haitian soldier Victoria Montou’s fight for independence, the destruction of Seneca Village are just a few of the stories embodied in the works in this exhibition.

Ryan Cosbert (b. 1999 Brooklyn, NY) is an African-American (of Haitian & Guyanese descent) conceptual artist who’s work approaches and focuses on her own humanistic experiences, self-expression, political issues and historical narratives. Cosbert encourages her viewers to see things from an internal and external perspective to explore and ignite conversations while encouraging higher consciousness. Cosbert rigorously researches the history and people of the African diaspora that she uses as inspiration for the subjects of her work. She is also particularly interested in the consequences of subjugation and oppression along with their historical and generational impact on the Black community.

When it comes to Cosbert’s abstract paintings she creates a sense of control using the grid format to apply what she calls “tiles” which creates a geometrical balance. She forms different layers using the tiles, paints, and physical objects giving the work more depth and a three-dimensional composition. Both color and materiality play an important role in her work. She often incorporates physical objects that tie directly to the subject matter of the painting. Cosbert recently graduated from The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City with a BFA in Fine Arts (Class of 2021).

Emmanuel Massillon (b. 1998 in Washington D.C.) is an African American conceptual artist who works with different mediums including painting, photography, and sculpture. With these varying mediums, he explores the complex history of race, identity, culture and his relation to people of African descent. Massillon's upbringing in the inner city of Washington D.C. shapes the unique narrative that he strives to convey through his work, which is introducing others to new ideas by creating work from day-to-day life to politically charged topics. With this, he aims for his viewers to start and explore conversations that may or may not have been previously spoken about.

Concerned about the visibility of artists who share his vision and commitments, Massillon occasionally commissions exhibitions of contemporary art. He currently attends The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City and is pursuing a BFA in Fine Arts. In recognition of his academic and artistic accomplishments, Massillon was selected as a recipient of the Silas H. Rhodes Scholarship and is a recipient of the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities Exhibitions (Curatorial) Grant.

La Galerie Julien Cadet a le plaisir de présenter l'exposition Only Time Will Tell qui réunit les oeuvres d'Emmanuel Massillon et de Ryan Cosbert. Ces deux artistes sont liés par une source d'inspiration commune : l'histoire et la culture des Afro-Américains et plus généralement, de la diaspora africaine. Ils ne s'intéressent pas à une interprétation romancée de ces histoires, mais plutôt aux événements qui se sont produits et aux personnes qui y ont participé. Le premier homme Afro-Américain à aller dans l'espace, l'histoire de la soldate haïtienne Victoria Montou luttant pour l'indépendance ou encore la destruction de Seneca Village, sont quelques-unes des histoires incarnées par les œuvres présentées dans cette exposition.

Ryan Cosbert (née en 1999 à Brooklyn, NY) est une artiste conceptuelle afro-américaine (d'origine haïtienne et guyanaise) dont le travail se concentre sur ses propres expériences humanistes, l'expression de soi, les questions politiques et les récits historiques. Cosbert encourage ses spectateurs à diversifier leur point de vue afin d'ouvrir le dialogue et favoriser une prise de conscience. Cosbert puise son inspiration dans l'Histoire Afro-Americaine et celle des peuples de la diaspora africaine. Elle s'intéresse particulièrement aux conséquences de l'assujettissement et de l'oppression, ainsi qu'à leur impact historique et générationnel sur la communauté noire.

Dans ses peintures abstraites, Cosbert crée l'illusion de contrôle en utilisant le motif de la grille. En effet, elle applique des "carreaux" qui créent un équilibre géométrique et donnent le rythme à ses compositions. La couleur et la matérialité jouent un rôle important dans son travail. L'artiste applique plusieurs couches de peintures et n'hésite pas à incorporer des objets physiques qui se rapportent directement au sujet de l'oeuvre. Cosbert a récemment obtenu une licence aux Beaux-Arts à la School of Visual Arts (SVA) de New York (Promotion 2021).

Emmanuel Massillon (né en 1998 à Washington D.C.) est un artiste conceptuel afro-américain qui travaille sur différents supports, notamment la peinture, la photographie et la sculpture. Au travers de ces différents médiums, il explore l'histoire complexe de l'ethnicité, de l'identité, de la culture ainsi que de sa relation avec les personnes d'ascendance africaine. L'éducation de Massillon dans les quartiers défavorisés de Washington D.C. façonne le récit unique qu'il transmet au travers de son travail, en présentant aux autres de nouvelles idées, en créant des œuvres dont les thèmes traitent de la vie quotidienne aussi bien que des sujets politiquement engagés. Il souhaite ainsi que ses spectateurs entament et explorent des conversations qui n'ont peut-être jamais été abordées auparavant.

Soucieux de la visibilité des artistes qui partagent sa vision et ses engagements, Massillon commissionne ponctuellement des expositions d'art contemporain afin de contribuer à leur mise en lumière. Il fréquente actuellement la School of Visual Arts (SVA) à New York et prépare une licence de beaux-arts. En reconnaissance de ses réalisations académiques et artistiques, Massillon a été sélectionné pour la bourse Silas H. Rhodes, ainsi que celle du District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities Exhibitions (Curatorial) Grant.
