Ulrik is pleased to present Looking in the Bottle, the first solo exhibition of London-based artist Matthew Pang in New York.

The exhibition consists of four diamond-shaped paintings and a trio of three-dimensional canvases. The Head in Bottle series presents an enlarged and truncated bottle of perfume. Across repetitions, it splits, inverts, and shatters. The cuboid constructions are analogous to Raoul De Keyser’s Linen Boxes, which he made throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The text of the perfume brand, the contours of the glass bottle, and the spray tube provide both the format and the imagery. Figures are depicted across the surface of the works, seen either from inside the bottle or viewed through it. Like Pamela Colman Smith’s illustration for the Tarot card of the Tower, the structure breaches and expels what it holds.

The Traitors series depicts an eye integrated with bars so that figure and structure are contiguous. In one case the support splits the image across two canvases. In another instance the image is divided by color.

Matthew Pang lives and works in London.
