More from Valerie Keane on Gallop

"…In contrast to the way other promising youths make it their business to become clever and reasonable, I have constantly had a special prediction for folly and tried to bring about absolute confusion in myself so as to achieve a fine and complete chaos…

Here I sit by the dusky glow of the single ever burning lamp and often even appear to myself like a night spirit."

-The Night Watches, Tr. Gerald Gillespie

On display in the gallery are four new works by the artist Valerie Keane, accompanied by a projection of a new series of photographs selected for the exhibition by Oto Gillen.

Produced over the course of the past year, Keane’s works hang throughout the entire space, their forms illuminated by draped LED lights and spillover from the projection. Made from Perspex and inset with stainless steel bolts, toggles, and hooks, they float a few inches off the ground. Rubber threads snake along their spines and fall down to the floor.

For the past few months, Oto Gillen has been taking photographs at night on the streets of New York. His photographs capture the city’s evolving architecture and the sidewalk’s most pitiful objects. Yet, as new enclosures erupt onto the skyline, the city retains a kinetic constancy. An ongoing series, the images are projected onto a screen in the center of the space.
