Neugerriemschneider is pleased to present the gallery’s ninth solo exhibition of Sharon Lockhart’s work, Movements and Variations. Comprising photography and sculpture, the installation synthesizes the artist’s longstanding interests in the Japanese art of Ikebana, choreography, and the empowerment of women.
Six sculptures A Bundle and Five Variations (all 2018) each comprise a collection of branches, cast in bronze from manzanita, buckeye, and black walnut, which Lockhart gathered in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. They are meticulously arranged by Lockhart in collaboration with Ravi GuneWardena, a master from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, and recall Lockhart’s earlier engagements with NO-no Ikebana – a radical variation that uses crops and vegetables in place of blossoms. Lockhart and GuneWardena first created a bundle of nine sticks and then devised five further adaptations that explore the sticks’ inherent variability.
Lockhart travelled with manzanita sticks to give as gifts to her long-time collaborators, a group of young women from the Youth Socio-therapy Centre in Rudzienko, Poland. The sticks acted as both a marker of place, and also as objects for discussion, play and improvisation, becoming part of the film they made together, Little Review (2017), which Lockhart presented at the Polish Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale. In the film, the girls move and dance with the sticks, wielding them with power and agency.
In Movements and Variations, the photographs Nine Sticks in Nine Movements (2018) expand on the ideas of weight and balance in the bronze sculptures, while evoking the power the sticks held in the hands of the young women of Rudzienko. Lockhart and the protagonist, Sichong Xie, worked together to generate a movement for each of the bronzes, which is choreographed to respond to the mass, directionality and form of each bronze branch. Taking on postures that suggest resolve and determination, Xie subtly invokes stances from art and social history, offering a contemporary meditation on movement, female power and the history of portraiture.
Coinciding with Movements and Variations at Neugerriemschneider we are delighted that Sharon Lockhart presents a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Centre Vilnius (February 9 - April 1, 2019). Featuring video installation and photography, this exhibition marks the European premiere of Lockhart’s filmic work Rudzienko (2016). The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with contributions from Suzanne Hudson, A.E. Benenson, and the Contemporary Art Centre curators Inesa Brasiske and Justina Zubaitė.
