More from Craig Kauffman & Amy Lincoln on Gallop
Parrasch Heijnen is pleased to present Craig Kauffman / Amy Lincoln, an exhibition pairing new paintings by New York–based artist Amy Lincoln (b. 1981, Bloomington, IN) with select historic sculptures by Craig Kauffman (b. 1932, Los Angeles, CA – 2010, Angeles City, Philippines).
This exhibition brings together two artists deeply engaged with the experience of light and matter as they unfold within a spatial and temporal environment. Distinct in dimensionality, material, and process, both Kauffman and Lincoln treat surface not only as a vehicle for image-making, but as an active site where color and perception converge.
Amy Lincoln applies chromatic pigment in thin, successive layers across carefully ordered divisions of the pictorial plane. Color accumulates gradually, producing subtle tonal shifts and a luminosity that appears to emanate from the panel's surface. Lincoln's studies in chromatic gradation engage surface as both structure and threshold. Although her perceptual landscapes remain distinctly flat, their radiance extends beyond the material presence of each work; her paintings emerging through the interplay and synthesis of tonal variations, evoking the shifting phenomena of light.
Craig Kauffman's biomorphic, vacuum-formed plastic sculptural bubble works from 1968–1969 investigated and transformed surface: each of his wall reliefs pulling outward into physical space. Frequently coated on the interior with acrylic lacquer, Kauffman amplified the translucency of his materials to achieve a luminous radiance, their forms revealing shifting values of color, marking the material inseparable from the environment and the optical experience of the works.
Despite distinct material approaches, Kauffman and Lincoln share aesthetic languages grounded in physical presence while evoking a state of flux through their spatial interplay. Both artists employ a rigorous sense of containment: Lincoln's highly saturated, meticulously controlled imagery constructs an enclosed, artificial world through repeated forms and gradations of color, while Kauffman's sealed plastic sculptures contain color beneath their expanded surfaces. This tension between containment and luminosity heightens the sensation of light and the full chromatic spectrum as they press against the limits of each work's surface.
Amy Lincoln received her MFA from Temple University's Tyler School of Art in 2006 and her BA from University of California, Davis in 2003.
