Hauser & Wirth New York presents acclaimed American artist Paul McCarthy’s seminal and biting satirical film ‘Painter’ (1995), as well as a notable selection of paintings and other works highlighting the artist’s practice. Featuring McCarthy as the eponymous painter, ‘Painter’ draws on elements characteristic of his oeuvre, from bodily functions and the grotesque to black comedy and repetition, in order to caricature key players in the art world—collectors, dealers, and, above all, the heroic artist. One of the most influential and groundbreaking artists of our time, McCarthy is celebrated for his visceral, often hauntingly humorous work in a variety of mediums—from film, video, performance and photography, to sculpture, drawing and painting.
