Sun is an exhibition by Nicolas Kubail Kalousdian featuring an autonomous robotic sculpture: a sphere sheathed in interlocking, hand-carved wooden fragments. The largest panels are engraved with a Mesopotamian eclipse ritual, anchoring the piece in ancient cosmology.
Alternating between hums and howls, Sun moves in rhythm with an internal prayer. As it navigates the space with self-correcting motion, it pauses, turns, and responds to obstacles and onlookers, weaving together machine logic and ceremonial rhythm.
Drawing from Neolithic stone balls, Mesopotamian mouth-opening rites, Ice Age flutes, and the myth of walking monoliths, Sun is a fragment of world memory: a composite of glimpses unearthed across history.
Nicolas Kubail Kalousdian (b. 1993, São Paulo, Brazil) holds a MSc from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). The upcoming exhibition at Mery Gates marks his first presentation of artworks in the United States since 2016.
