Artistellar is pleased to present Home Alone, a solo show by Korean artist Jeehye Song. Jeehye Song (b. 1991 Seoul) currently lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. This show is the artist’s first solo show in the UK and presents her most recent works. Across six paintings rendered in soft pastel colours, Song presents her humorous characters in precarious situations. At close look, they are snippets from daily life matters that take a treacherous turn.

Home Alone is like a window into the psyche of everyday life, where current state emotions are enhanced and left afloat. Her disproportionated figures are in a limp, melting-like state that appears almost comical. Song gets inspired by the absurdity of our domestic life and daily activities, which she transforms into unusual situations and scenarios in order to create new perspectives. She aims to eliminate the barriers and distance between the viewer and the artwork through humor and a playful approach. Her awkwardly constructed bulky characters reference the mundanity and ugliness of regular things and moments. On the other hand, her images are rendered in aesthetically pleasing soft, pastel colours, thus adding a pinch of dreamy atmosphere. This creates a contradictory nature where absurdity, ridicule, and dream-like state coexist. It is a reflection of one’s mental image.

Jeehye Song ( b. 1991 Seoul) is a Korean artist who lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. Song majored in Print Making and graduated from Chugye University for the Arts in 2010. Three years later, she received her bachelor’s degree in Metal Art and Design at Seoul National University of Science&Technology. Afterwards she moved to Düsseldorf, Germany, to study at Kunstakademie in the classes of Prof. Andreas Schulze and Stefan Kürten. She successfully graduated in 2021. Since then, she has had solo shows in Germany (Artothek Köln, Ruttkowski;68), Italy (IAH Gallery), and South Korea ( IAH Gallery) and participated in a number of group shows (ie. Août gallery, Beirut, Lebanon).

Song’s work is inspired by her daily life, which she transforms into unusual situations and scenarios in order to create new perspectives. Her paintings can be understood as a diary of her everyday life which is enhanced by her personal emotions and their processing. Her cartoon-like characters, set in a mundane, simple setting, appear almost comical as they struggle to accomplish easy tasks. Through humour, the artist aims to eliminate the barriers and distance between the viewer and the artwork.
