The VCU Department of Sculpture + Extended Media is proud to present its biannual MFA Exhibition.

The VCU Department of Sculpture + Extended Media prides itself on the range of methodologies engaged by its students. The 11 artists represented in this exhibition, all of whom received their MFA degrees in 2014 and 2015, enact this spirit by presenting work that is richly varied in its materiality, form, scale and conceptual approach. Reflecting the diversity of research found within the program, the exhibition moves from sloppy American optimism to synthetic ontologies, from the mediation of performance to the haunting of space, from reconstituted banality to kitschy obsessive love, from porous membranes to new patriarchies, and from the warping of space-time to the scratching of an itch.

For over a decade The Department of Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University has been the top ranked* Sculpture MFA program in the country. A rigorous two-year program, it encourages and expects artists working in all media to develop their potential, challenge accepted notions of contemporary art and enter the evolving cultural conversation of our time. Graduate students are provided with generous studio spaces, state-of-the-art equipment and the time, support, and encouragement to pursue independent goals.

Located in Richmond, VA, VCU Sculpture counts among its full-time faculty such distinguished artists as Ester Partegas, Carlton Newton, Michael Jones McKean, Kendall Buster, Corin Hewitt, Matt King and critic/curator Gregory Volk.

Notable alumni include Diana Al-Hadid, SunTek Chung, Teresita Fernandez, Oscar Santillan, Alina Tenser, Bonnie Collura, Ian McMahon, Taylor Baldwin and Tara Donovan.

Recent visiting artists and scholars include Ernesto Pujol, Graham Harman, Claude Wampler, Leslie Hewitt, Clifford Owens, Brian Bress, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Frances Stark, Bryan Zanisnik, Mark Dion, Mika Rottenberg, and Jacolby Satterwhite.
