Samara Scott

The Sunday Painter is pleased to announce a special solo exhibition with London-based artist Samara Scott in the gallery’s offsite project space in Los Angeles. Renowned for her process-driven, large-scale environments of impermanent material, Scott will take over Four Six One Nine in Culver City, Los Angeles with a site-specific installation directly influenced by the city’s cultural and physical landscape.

Scott’s seemingly stagnant sculptures possess an inherent dynamism; though they appear still, the materials continuously interact and evolve throughout the duration of the exhibition—chemically and otherwise. These colorful layers of objects and liquid create a sort of sculptural pool, where textures and colors meld and the material interactions provoke multiple sensory responses. The transformative installations reflect a chaotic, yet curated reflection of daily life, our consumption habits, and the resulting detritus we produce. The physical space becomes not only a reflection of contemporary culture as a whole, but an abstract representation of the environment in which it was created, as Scott routinely incorporates elements from her immediate surroundings. As a result, her choices of material are exquisitely diverse and surprising—material pulled from local supermarkets, the outdoors, or her studio.

In this installation, Scott responds to the Los Angeles urban landscape—incorporating the colors, graphics, and textures of the city through her collection of found objects, images, and organic matter. Much like the city itself, the installation will be sprawling. Spread across the entire gallery floor, Scott will incorporate plastic sheeting and various vessels to form different pools comprised of dyes, body products, gels, food, make-up, and paints. As Scott’s work exposes the grit—often literally—of contemporary culture and our obsessive accumulation and decumulation of things, each of her installations reveals the varied components and deep investigation of the current human condition. The works require active participation from the viewer—not only must we adjust our physical orientation to observe the depth of the work, we are also compelled to visually search and decipher recognizable symbols and process the self-reflections found within.

This will be The Sunday Painter’s first exhibition in Los Angeles.

Samara Scott (b. 1985) was born and raised in London where she lives and works. Past projects include Developer, Pump House Gallery, London; Frieze London, 2015; and Silks, Eastside Projects, Birmingham, 2015; among others.

Initially conceived as an artist project space, The Sunday Painter is a London-based gallery established in 2009 by Harry Beer, Tom Cole and Will Jarvis. They represent Rob Chavasse, Leo Fitzmaurice, Emma Hart, Piotr Lakomy, Alex Rathbone, Samara Scott, and Tyra Tingleff.
