Terrick Gutierrez & Ayobami Ogungbe

Rele Los Angeles is pleased to present Process + Place, a two-person exhibition featuring new works by Terrick Gutierrez and Ayobami Ogungbe.

Process + Place brings together two distinct yet connected artistic practices that explore how memory, home, and personal experience shape our understanding of space. While Gutierrez and Ogungbe come from different cultural contexts within the African Diaspora, their work shares a deep interest in how identity, domestic life, and the emotional weight of place are carried through material and memory. Using experimental techniques and personal visual languages, both artists reflect on the layered experiences of displacement, belonging, and cultural preservation.

The exhibition continues a transcontinental dialogue—bridging geographies to reveal both the contrasts and common threads in how communities across the Diaspora hold space for history, home, and healing.Los Angeles-based artist Terrick Gutierrez engages a materially hybrid practice that merges photography, sculpture, and textile interventions. Drawing from Belizean and Mexican American cultural lineages, Gutierrez reconfigures familial archives and domestic residues into hand-woven photo-sculptures. These works collapse time and perception, simultaneously acting as archival index and conceptual rupture.

Ayobami Ogungbe, based in Lagos, Nigeria, approaches his mixed-media compositions through acts of layering, erasure, and texture. Working with materials such as paper towels, paint, and found media, Ogungbe constructs dreamlike architectural assemblages that meditate on memory, identity, and the quiet intimacy. His spatial studies are simultaneously fragile and assertive, revealing the interior architectures we inhabit, and that inhabit us.

Together, Gutierrez and Ogungbe reflect on how place is remembered, reconstituted, and emotionally mapped. Process + Place proposes that home is not a fixed geography, but a living, mutable archive.
