Jess Xiaoyi Han

Ross + Kramer is pleased to present Jess Xiaoyi Han’s first exhibition with the gallery entitled, Something Within the Lines of Love.

In her debut exhibition, Han presents eleven new paintings made within the last year. Working with alkyd, a type of paint similar to oil, Han makes incredible abstract paintings that take cues from Kandisky and Tanguy. Her works combine the sleekness of these masters with something uniquely illogical and beautiful. Her paintings seem to be representative, in the sense that they represent illusionistic space (seemingly recognizable objects like pearls of miniscule planets coexist with tendrils of eviscera or petals or fragments of landscape tumbling in on one another, ignoring general rules of scale, space and narrative, all in a dazzling palette) and yet all of these elements are equally unidentifiable and abstract.

Han speaks of her process in expressionistic terms, often citing specific moments in her life and experiences as direct references for her paintings. Titles like The Good Kind of Spiraling, Birthday, and Kiss Me Through the Light allude to the psychological undercurrent of these works. Bright cheerful colors cleave against the tense compositions in her works, producing seductive and intriguing images.

Jess Xiaoyi Han (b. 1997 in Dalian, China) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.She has lived between New York and Shanghai for most of her life. Han received her BFA from School of Visual Arts, NY with a concentration on illustration. She has exhibited her work primarily in China, with exhibitions at Bridge Gallery, Sanya; The Himalaya Center, Shanghai; Zero Art Space, Zhengzhou; Yes! Art Fair, Beijing; Tasso Gallery. Something within the lines of love is her first solo exhibition in the United States.
