Scott Laufer

0-0 LA is proud to present Here, Boy by Los Angeles based artist Scott Laufer.

In the painting “Stag Hunt Painting 1 (Deseportes)” Laufer reinterprets Alexandre-Francois Deseportes ́ depiction the near final moments of a traditional deer hunt. In this practice the pack of dogs pursue the deer for hours on end, the deer darting ahead with dogs in patient pursuit. When the deer is overheated and physically depleted he turns to face tormentors. The dogs circle and attack holding the animal for the hunter to kill at close range. This hunting method is still occasionally employed today with modern modifications and contemporary scrutiny. In a similar way Laufer works in various bygone modes of painting, updating and twisting them and offering them up for contemporary critique. The paintings in “Here, Boy” seamlessly sample from 18th century hunt paintings, Gerhard Richter ́s photo paintings and California Minimalisms ́planes of translucent color. The results are virtuosic paintings that set the table for a discussion of tradition and craft, and where they fit into our schizophrenic culture.

As a self educated artist, Laufer employs classically informed methods to explore themes of identity, religion and sexuality as they apply to contemporary cultural disillusionment. Drawing on personal history and experience, the works are often autobiographical, if not wholly literal. Laufer lives and works in Los Angeles.
