Lazarew is delighted to present americano-israeli artist Aharon Gluska at the gallery.
The selection of works for this new show has been made in May in Aharon's studio (Highland, NYC). Large abstract paintings on canvas are featured along with impressive material work on paper, inviting the viewer to wander through imaginary landscapes.
Since 2014, Lazarew Gallery has been presenting Aharon Gluska's work in Europe, in particular two major series that the artist has been working on in parallel.
For the series Between the Lines (initiated in 2017), each canvas is made up of about 60 layers of scraped paint, on a canvas that has been worked on beforehand so that horizontal lines appear in subtle imprints as the layers of paint are applied. This is the artist's most intimate series. It is about the memory of a life, where the first layers, the essence of a being, inevitably reappear, no matter what is added. A few projections break the narrative horizontality of the lines, which gives a hypnotic vibration to the whole.
As a counterpoint, the artist has been working since 2014 on the series "Imagined Landscapes », an impressive series of imagined landscapes, composed of pigments, inks and other materials, revealed on paper in large water baths, with an almost photographic rendering. Through this series, the artist wished to represent more the very process of the constitution of natural elements, particularly minerals in their last expression, than existing landscapes. These Landscapes, deserts all in matter, captivate by their silent and mineral power. The contemplation of these fascinating landscapes brings us back to the purity of the origins, preserved from the madness of men.
Aharon Gluska's paintings and works on paper, whether totally abstract or almost figurative, have in common a claimed horizontality, a great technical mastery and a material that does not give itself away at first sight. They sound like an invitation to refocus on our own truth. In silence. In great humility.
