Affinities: African Art and Modern Expression (Part I)

Affinities: African Art and Modern Expression features fifteen masks and figures from West and Central Africa and prints by Western artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. As the title suggests, the focus of the show is the visual affinities between the various works, exploring the often unexpected ways they relate to each other. Among the works on view are a Kota Reliquary Figure attributed to Semangoy; a well-known Grebo Mask from the Vérité collection, which was first exhibited in 1955; and a minimalistic Dan Mask from the Estate of Barry Kitnick.
