Traces of the Invisible, Cate Wind’s first solo exhibition in New York City, features all-new frottages on paper. Letting herself be carried away by the city and its energies, she creates rubbings of her surroundings, revealing aspects of New York not visible to the naked eye.

For the artist, all places carry the energy of the people who've been there, leaving marks that reveal their relations and history. By tracing uneven surfaces such as walls, sidewalks, and train tracks, Wind sees herself as a medium of hidden stories: “My work aims to show that huge urban cities don’t have to be hostile environments. I want to set an example of a subconscious cityscape that retains its humanity and connection to the earth. Everything is energy, our fast-moving society just made us unlearn to pause for a second and connect to it”.

As a vessel for the invisible, she translates New York’s – often times harsh – physical reality into snapshots of its vibrancy. While each dent, bump, or architectural imperfection either leaves a mark or blank space on her paper when counter-pressuring it with her marker, Wind’s movements also capture the vibrations of trains running underground while she’s painting. Using an intuitive method she’s been developing over the years, her rubbings could be understood as organic shapes coming to life. “It’s about a particular state of awareness. Putting the ego aside, creating a space of total mindfulness and connecting to a higher self that doesn’t think, but feels.”

Cate Wind’s Traces of the Invisible is open to the public by appointment in Soho, New York. Her limited prints will be available online by the end of this year.

Born in Durban, South Africa, Cate Wind lives and works in Berlin and New York. She has a journeyman certificate in glass and porcelain painting from the State Glass School Rheinbach and studied Visual Communication in Aachen, Germany. After building a design agency for the past 25 years, she now focuses on her art. Her work has been included in recent exhibitions at BBA Gallery in Berlin; The Holy Art in London and Van Der Plas Gallery in New York.
