Allan Sekula

Christopher Grimes Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of early works by Allan Sekula. This exhibition will include unique, preliminary versions of Sekula's established works such as This Ain’t China (unique maquette) (1974), comprised of almost 90 contact sheet prints depicting the class struggle of kitchen workers (including the artist himself), and School is a Factory, consisting of selected prints that have never been exhibited. Also on view will be Meditations on a Triptych, as well as Long Beach Notes and the single-channel video Reagan Tape, among others.

Allan Sekula (1951-2013) is a renowned photographer, theorist, historian of photography and writer. Recent solo exhibitions include Fish Story, to be continued at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, Gillman Barracks, Singapore (2015); Dockers' Museum, Johan Jacobs Museum, Zürich, Switzerland (2014); Meditations on a Tritpych, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2013); and Ship of Fools, Ludwig Museum, Budapest, Hungary (2010). Select group exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2015); Leal Rios Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal (2015); Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2014); Victoria & Albert Museum, London, England (2014); MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts, Rome, Italy (2014); 55th Venice Biennale, Catalan pavilion (2013); 29th Bienal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil (2010); and Documenta XII and XI, Kassel, Germany (2007 and 2002).
