Another Gallery is pleased to present On the Outside, the first West Coast solo exhibition by Camilla Marie Dahl.

Camilla Marie Dahl explores an alluring impenetrability and almost comforting alienation by creating a familiar view of the archetypal home which ultimately can never be entered. A residency during the off-season on Cuttyhunk, a Massachusetts vacation island, reveals that homes can take on lives and personalities of their own in the absence of their inhabitants. Each building is bathed in light and simplified to its core architecture. Windowless and impenetrable, Dahl’s interpretation of these houses are more like monuments than homes, keeping memories in and intruders out.

Dahl’s use of pumice, perlite, and paint leaves little room for detail as the intent to emote prevails. Her use of color and texture draws the spectator in while the structures refuse to give themselves away. Frozen in place, but not unfeeling, their untold stories permeate all who pass–urging them to look on, but never allowing them to look in. Her work contrasts the colloquially warm ideal of a home with the blunt reality that the viewer is not a guest, but a voyeur. A comfortable silence settles as Dahl finds ease in the opportunity to simply observe; On the Outside’s minimalist works urges those who encounter them to do the same.
