Tiona Nekkia McClodden

Pure Gaze features 15 sculptural paintings from Tiona Nekkia McClodden's ongoing series Never Let Me Go, initiated in 2023. Debuting a new body of work, the exhibition furthers the artist's exploration of the idea of pressure through prolonged constriction, or a hold in excess of duration.

The works employ traditional Japanese kinbaku-bi rope techniques on fine leather hide-bound canvases. Per the practice of kinbaku-bi, each work is executed according to a particular order of operation and framed within the beauty of tight binding. The leather canvases are treated with a range of hand-dyed colour techniques that produce abstract blooms, visually invoking wounds or bruises.
