Ida Schmid is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition, We agreed the paler tones would make a more subtle statement, curated by Dmitry Komis. The title is borrowed from dialogue in the Woody Allen film "Interiors," which conflates domestic aesthetics with a family's psychological breakdown and the frailty of the human condition. Eve, the ascetic matriarch who utters the title line, is an interior decorator, struggling to keep herself together by focusing on the arrangement of objects surrounding her. Discouraged by the permeating mediocrity and disappointment of family life, and unable to make significant changes toward her wellbeing, eve resigns to living in isolation, withdrawing into herself.

This exhibition, which takes place in an intimate ground floor residential space, is not an attempt to define a fictional inner life by presenting a specific domestic environment, but rather conveys a general feeling of insularity and self-containment. It presents works in a variety of media by a group of artists who share an interest in form, material, and texture that allows for a reading of interiority. Subtle shifts in color and scale, mirroring and repetition of forms, all lead to a dialogue about the conventions of framing and presentation, and the deeper psychological implication of articulating identity through the disruption of a seemingly ordinary domestic space.
