Dora Budor (to be titled), 2017 Frogs rain down from prop master memories of a beloved film, Magnolia, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, an elusive and cryptic filmmaker whose constructions of cinematic reality are most often at odds with the characters he places in them. This amphibian precipitation collects inside the diffusion screen of a fluorescent lamp. Budor reassigns this meteorology, conducting the dirty water with motion sensors that translate the passive actions of the audience into a new behavior. This calm, ethereal choreography of artificial light produces a vertiginous deal breaker from cinematic romance as a suspension of disbelief, that third person omniscient free floating conceptual judgment machine that allows us to sit outside the narrative of anything… and causes so much stress, as so much of our old thoughts, which held such beautiful promises of freedom through externalized consideration, have been razed by a vicious technological present. Budor’s work, constructed on these demolished sites of our former protected idealisms, resurrects the physical ideas at the core of our experiences of those dead paradigms, burnishing the parapets as new stages for the quantum problem: whatever we observe, we are part of. Budor proposes a new erotic relationship with the most magical and sophisticated bits and pieces of some of humanity’s biggest ideas, ideas that have begun to no longer mean what we thought they did: architecture, science, design… Budor’s work generously gifts the things we love back to us, expressed through these open door, premium cable channel objects that issue us a new license to enjoy. Calvin Seibert’s sand sculptures are like Tino Sehgal performances: humane, astounding, intimate, generated from a process greater than the sum of its products, and ultimately impossible to sell or preserve. A curious workaholic child, not checking bags today, living life without gravity.
