Stefan Sagmeister

Patrick Parrish Gallery is pleased to present Now Is Better, an upcoming solo exhibition of work by renowned Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister. The exhibition features original lenticular prints as well as adapted historical paintings that visualize long-term statistics on global development.

Sagmeister’s new work is largely inspired by the premise of long-term thinking, with each piece covering data trends on humanity (ranging from life expectancy to home ownership rates) over the course of 50 to 200 years. Challenging the overwhelming, highly-saturated content we absorb about the world on the daily through short-term media sources on our screens, Sagmeister’s exhibition offers a grounding, data-oriented approach towards conceiving society's progress. This zoomed-out perspective often points to ways that life on Earth has slowly been improving, providing a boost of hope as we continue working to make “now” better.

Stefan Sagmeister (b. 1962, Austria) received his MFA from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and, as a Fulbright Scholar, a master’s degree from Pratt Institute in New York. He formed the New York-based Sagmeister, Inc. in 1993 and has since designed for clients as diverse as the Guggenheim Museum, the Rolling Stones, and HBO. Having been nominated eight times, he finally won two Grammy awards for his design work with the Talking Heads and Brian Eno & David Byrne. He has also earned practically every important international design award.

Sagmeister's work is in the collections of MoMA, New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, SFMoMA, the MAK in Vienna as well as many other international institutions. He teaches in the graduate department of the School of Visual Art in New York and lectures extensively internationally.
