Gwen Yip & Spencer Patrick

Our next exhibition pairs Gwen Yip's Subway Backs — riders observed from behind on the platforms of the New York subway, flattened, precise, held at a distance by the architecture that contains them — with Spencer Patrick's Artificial, whose solitary figures rest, eyes closed, inside comfort they have carefully manufactured. Public passage and private ritual, two forms of turning away: together the works ask how the man-made became our nature, and what of the first nature remains.
