Asad Faulwell

The Kravets Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Obelisk Movements, a solo exhibition of Asad Faulwell, opening on Thursday, October 16th, 2014 and running through November 19th, 2014.

Asad Faulwell’s new canvases continue to champion women who were freedom fighters from the Battle of Algiers. This is a play on “Les Femmes D’Alger” made popular by painters Picasso and Delacroix, in which Algerian women were generally painted in Harems or in eroticized scenes.

Meticulously detailed patterns trace the passage of culture through design. This body of work focuses on the use of small cut out pieces of photography and pins as means of creating line and drawing. The triptych on display, much like the multi panel painting in his exhibition at the Nerman Museum has approximately 3,500 pins in it and over 2,000 hand cut photos. This technique contrasts with the western tradition of figurative painting, which he layers over entrancing and psychedelic backgrounds.

Asad Faulwell currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. In 2013; He had his first one person museum exhibition at the Nerman Museum in Kansas. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the University Art Museum Long Beach and the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art. His work was also included in LA Louver and has been written about in Artforum, the LA times. The January 2014 Harpers Bazaar Art issue ran a large expose on Faulwell’s work and studio practice.
