Another Gallery LA is pleased to present the first solo exhibition and West Coast debut by Ivana Carman, Reflections.

Ivana Carman (b. 1991) presents recent still-lifes and interiors that are all carefully witnessed and/or imagined scenarios, and rely on her direct surroundings in New York throughout the past year.

As Ivana’s work embraces close observation, it simultaneously considers the metaphorical, emotional, and abstract nature of painting. Through an assemblage of drawing, painting, photography, collaged fabric, and printmaking, she synthesizes visual languages sampled from antiquity to modernism to describe the contemporary mind and observer. Exploring the complex relationships between the virtual and the real, the intimate and the public, the factual and the imagined.

Ivana amplifies the tension between representation and abstraction by organizing visual information through a unique geometric lens. Her paintings flicker between flat color, gestural marks, sensitive drawing, and photographic print elements. In their amalgamation, these disparate parts harmonize to evoke a sensation of lived experience. Using potent color and intimate brush marks, she creates a convincing reality that breaks with abstraction. Animating quiet interiors with emotional and psychological depth.

By reflecting on her own experience, she considers how the rich and complex inner life of a contemporary mind fragments and distorts the way we move through and see the world.
