Klara Hobza

Soy Capitán is pleased to present Self-portrait by Klara Hobzaf. At the center is the ongoing series “Biography” (2002, 2012, 2022), for which the artist formulates a new variation of her own biography every ten years, starting at birth and ending with her own future death. The serial nature of this work illustrates the impermanence of one’s perspective on the past, present, and future, demonstrating how the self and its perception selectively rearrange and reinvent themselves with aging.

Klara Hobza’s practice incorporates performance, video, drawing and sculpture and is conceptually held together by narrations of self-imposed endeavours. In her multilayered artworks, Hobza captures natural matters in analytic and often also humorous ways, while maintaining an underlying thread connecting a sense of discovery, playfulness and wonder. Having studied under Mark Dion at Columbia University in New York, Hobza’s works and projects engage deeply with nature, featuring a strong interest in animal life as well as an investigative play on science’s limitations. While drawings play a growing important role in her practice, the artist also engages in long term conceptual works such as her scuba-diving project.

Klara Hobza born 1975 in Pilsen, Czech Republic, lives and works in Berlin and Paris. She received a diploma from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and and holds a MFA from Columbia University. Her work has been exhibited internationally since 2005.
