More from Dorothy Iannone on Gallop
Air de Paris is pleased to present Dorothy Iannone’s new solo exhibition: Extase and the Roulette Table.
Two historical works will be presented: Extase (1970), a set of drawings by Dorothy Iannone illustrated with a song by Robert Filliou and Roulette Table, Love is my Inspiration (1972), a roulette table enhanced by painting and texts.
In the spring of 1966, Dorothy Iannone met Robert Filliou in the garden of the sculptor Albert Féraud. In Antibes Automatic, she sings about the beginning of their relationship:
« Long ago in Antibes, in Cap d’Antibes,
I met you and loved you and still do today.
You captured my mind dear, I touched your French soul Now look where we find ourselves, in this German hole.
Our lives touched and changed, dear, long ago in Antibes... »
In the spring of 1968, Dorothy Iannone and Dieter Roth went to live in Düsseldorf, where Dieter Roth was to be professor at the Kunst Akademie. They invited the Fillious to come to Düsseldorf.
In 1970, Extase is published, a collection of drawings by Dorothy Iannone and a song by Robert Filliou. In the same year, Robert Filliou invited her to write an essay in Teaching and Learning as Performing Arts :
« These days I am interested in ecstasy. That is, I think, I want it all the time. Never mind what they say about the nature of ecstasy, I’ve got a feeling one could limit oneself to such an extent that it would be possible half the time - and that’s like all the time. »
New works will also be presented: four Giant People, full-length wooden cutouts of Jan Voss, Robert and Marianne Filliou who were among the friends present at the roulette evening as well as a cutout of Dorothy Iannone, the croupier who announced « Les Jeux sont Faits »
Born in Boston in 1933, Dorothy Iannone lives and works in Berlin. Air de Paris organized her first solo exhibition, She Is A Freedom Fighter, in 2007, and the New Museum presented Lioness, her first one- person show in the United States in 2009. Her mixed media work I Was Thinking Of You was included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial. She has recently had major retrospectives, notably at the Camden Art Centre in London (2013), the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin (2014) the Migros Museum in Zurich (2014) and Centre Pompidou (2019).

« Long ago in Antibes, in Cap d’Antibes,
I met you and loved you and still do today.
You captured my mind dear, I touched your French soul Now look where we find ourselves, in this German hole. Our lives touched and changed, dear, long ago in Antibes »
