Elise Ferguson

106 Green is proud to present "Flippity", a solo exhibition by Elise Ferguson. The show will consist of a group of paintings made from pigmented plaster on mdf, all completed in 2016.

Elise Ferguson makes paintings based on symmetry, mathematical puzzles, and pattern variation. Through specific color and texture, her works play with perception both optically and conceptually. They appear sometimes as fragments of a bigger picture – maybe something more representational, maybe signage, maybe a larger abstraction. Often they evoke certain real world objects: a matchbook, a tiled floor, a vinyl patter on the side of a truck, a map, a movie poster. The dense plaster shapes are built up over time, their many layers revealed in the beveled edges of the panels. Surface irregularities and unkempt edges highlight a tension between the physicality of her making and the order and control of her geometries.

Frequently, I am striving towards something that is cerebral yet physical, one that reflects my endless fascination with materials and their physical limits and capabilities. At the same time, I give equal importance to the pleasures of creating something resolutely optical: concentric circles, radiating grids and undulating patterns. While I make abstract images – things often begin to resemble “something”. Occasionally creating illusionistic space or a composition that appears representational. This tendency is reflected in the titles – a means of embracing the associative nature of looking, thinking and naming.

Elise Ferguson lives and works in Brooklyn. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her work is represented by Romer Young Gallery in San Francisco, CA and Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton, NY.
