Alan Prazniak

If I find a good view, I’ll bring it back to the studio and wring it out until it’s almost nothing.

I’m after a critical pointlessness, the odd way through a composition without a center. To understand how the quietest part of the painting is as vital as the loudest, and the small ways that they’re held together.

I think I keep going back to the outdoors because it aligns with my feelings about painting; wandering as an important gesture and a complicated freedom, an attempt to find meaning where there might be none.

In Virginia we did acid in the backyard of a haunted house. I felt a very important sense of all things just passing through.

Alan Prazniak was raised on a horse farm in rural Pennsylvania, where his formative years were spent navigating the idyllic landscapes of the Delaware Water Gap. He received his BFA from Tyler School of Art and his MFA from Rutgers. He lives and works in Brooklyn but remembers the countryside fondly and visits often. Prazniak has exhibited at Green Gallery, Fisher Parrish, Crush Curatorial, 5 Car Garage, and Projet Pangee, among others. In 2019, Prazniak was featured in a solo booth with Geary at Untitled, San Francisco, and had his second solo exhibition with Geary, an Artforum critic's pick, in 2020. In December 2020 his paintings will be featured along with Sun You at Untitled Art, Miami Beach.
