Karin Campbell

106 Green is pleased to present Sunnyside, a solo exhibition of works by Karin Campbell.

Karin Campbell’s work exudes an ecstatic painterliness. Energetic brushwork, bright colors, and wild shapes come together in joyful and rambunctious compositions. She draws from the language of cartoons, gestural abstraction, and notebook doodles. The paintings are animated, full of movement, but balance extroverted expression with interior contemplation.

Often humorous and light-hearted, Campbell's work is laced with melancholic, tense undertones. Comical teeth and smiling mouths open, close, eat, speak, and block entry to worlds that have no clear boundaries. Eyes conceal, reveal, stare, and intimidate. Stars glow and rainbows dazzle while radiating a possibly misplaced optimism.

“The works are loosely painted, held together with a drunken sailor sense of rhythm and balance. They teeter on the brink of collapse: clashing styles, alternating speeds, bright colors lie underneath and/or on top of murky ones, abstract shapes emerge suddenly as recognizable ones to simultaneously guide and allow unexpected associations and open ended narratives.”

Karin Campbell has been living and working in New York since 1998. This will be her first solo exhibitions of paintings. Her paintings have been in numerous group exhibitions, and she was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial as a performance artist. Her work has also been exhibited at PS1, the Sculpture Center, the Queens Museum, and Brennan and Griffin, NYC. She received her BFA from RISD, MFA from Tyler, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
