Galerie Thomas Fischer and Friederike Schilbach (Editorial Director at Aufbau) are pleased to present a new edition of Important Artifacts... by New York-based artist and writer Leanne Shapton.

Leanne Shapton's book „Important Artifacts...“ tells the love story of a couple who have separated: Lenore and Harold. In over 300 photos and descriptions, it brings together the private objects that remain from the couple's relationship and are now up for auction in the form of an auction catalog: Furniture, jewelry, clothing, vintage finds, a wristwatch, a teapot, a Scrabble game, two poodle figurines, a travel guide to Italy, paintings, and books. It is the chronicle of a love story, its rituals, its growing intimacy from the first rendezvous to the final separation. We follow Lenore and Harold's story through the description of their personal belongings and memorabilia. A marvelous book about what remains when love is gone.

Items for sale are photographed for secondhand marketplace listings. This mostly amateur, classified photography is a language in itself, a vernacular and virtual gallery of poses, lighting, details and abstractions that have collective and specific meaning. The photographs that pedestal the objects for sale, while pragmatic, meet along vectors of seduction and vectors of value. Painting from these photos is an attempt to study their particular language, conventions, and the transmission of desire. „Painted from pictures" is Leanne Shapton’s first exhibition in Germany.

Leanne Shapton (b. 1973) is a Canadian artist and writer based in New York City. She is the author of Swimming Studies, which won the National Book Critic's Circle Award Award for autobiography in 2012; The Native Trees of Canada; Was She Pretty; Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry; Sunday Night Movies; Women in Clothes co-edited with Sheila Heti and Heidi Julavits; and Guestbook: Ghost Stories. She published a children’s book in 2018 called Toys Talking.

Leanne Shapton has taught creative writing in the graduate degree programs at Columbia University and Sarah Lawrence College. She was the art director of the New York Times op ed page, and since 2021 has worked as the art editor at The New York Review of Books.

An exhibition of her paintings, „Books, Skirts, Figurines“ was shown at Picture Room Gallery, Brooklyn, in March 2023.

Leanne Shaptons Buch erzählt die Liebesgeschichte eines Paares, das sich getrennt hat: Lenore und Harold. Über die Beschreibung der abgebildeten Erinnerungsstücke verfolgen wir Lenore und Harolds Geschichte. Ein großartiges Buch über das, was bleibt, wenn die Liebe geht.

Zum Verkauf stehende Gegenstände werden oft für Kleinanzeigen fotografiert. Diese meist amateurhaften Fotografien haben eine eigene Bildsprache – eine virtuelle Galerie von Posen, Lichtverhältnissen, Details und Abstraktionen, die sowohl kollektive als auch spezifische Bedeutungen tragen. Die Fotos, die die zum Verkauf stehenden Objekte in Szene setzen, erfüllen pragmatische Zwecke, vermitteln aber auch Momente von Begehrlichkeit und Wert. Das Malen nach diesen Bildern ist der Versuch, ihre spezifische Sprache, Konventionen und die Übertragung von Begehren zu untersuchen. „Nach Bildern" ist Leanne Shaptons erste Ausstellung in Deutschland.
