Taya Naumovich

Following her intuition to create abstract combinations, Taya Naumovich has been using oils and experimental gestures to paint robot-like human figures suggestive of those often depicted in virtual spaces. Despite using very few facial features or intricate details, Naumovich is able to evoke complex moods, tones, and themes. Her newest works are inspired by the theories and techniques of canonical painters such as Leger and Picasso, yet she also deftly sifts through contemporary pop culture for imagery and content. Lipstick and rose emojis hide in plain sight among more traditional abstract landscapes and compositions.

HCG includes recent paintings by Naumovich completed during a time when the artist was pregnant as well as in her first few months of motherhood. The works address and explore many of the questions and ideas that confront those caring for new life: Questions of identity and interiority, transformation and regeneration, caretaking and self-healing, and our relationships with ourselves, others, and our surroundings. Profound inspiration for Naumovich comes from combining a vocabulary of different techniques and ideas and then reducing them to a simpler form. The works in this exhibition mark a turning point for the artist as she moves towards finding a balance between spontaneity and freedom within a more organic approach to using oil paints in rendering mixed-media, large-format paintings.
