The exhibition The Assault of the Present on the Rest of Time: Artistic Testimonies of War and Repression shows historical and contemporary positions that address state violence and repression. The moment of witnessing is in the foreground. Works from the 1930s and 1940s by Maria Luiko, Johanna Schütz-Wolff or Felix Nussbaum enter into a dialogue with the works of artists such as Simone Fattal, Dana Kavelina or Lawrence Abu Hamdan. The project is a cooperation between the Brücke Museum and the Schinkel Pavillon.

The starting point is the complexly connected history of the two buildings. The Schinkel Pavilion is located in the garden of the former Kronprinzenpalais, which housed the New Department of the National Gallery in the early 20th century. In this world’s first public collection of Modern Art, the Brücke artists had their first museal presentation – until the National Socialists confiscated hundreds of mainly expressionist works of art as “degenerate”. Some of the works defamed during this period found their way, via detours, to the Brücke Museum, which was founded 30 years later and is dedicated to the artists’ group of the same name.

Against the backdrop of the war unleashed by Russia in Ukraine, the exhibition curated by Katya Inozemtseva understands the past as continuity and present.

Die Ausstellung Der Angriff der Gegenwart auf die übrige Zeit. Künstlerische Zeugnisse von Krieg und Repression zeigt historische und zeitgenössische Positionen, die staatliche Gewalt und Unterdrückung thematisieren. Dabei steht das Moment der Zeug*innenschaft im Vordergrund. Werke aus den 1930er und 1940er Jahren von Maria Luiko, Johanna Schütz-Wolff oder Felix Nussbaum treten in einen Dialog mit den Arbeiten von zeitgenössischen Künstler*innen wie Simone Fattal, Dana Kavelina oder Lawrence Abu Hamdan. Das Projekt ist eine Kooperation von Brücke-Museum und Schinkel Pavillon.

Ausgangspunkt ist die komplex verbundene Geschichte der beiden Häuser. Der Schinkel Pavillon befindet sich im Garten des ehemaligen Kronprinzenpalais, das im frühen 20. Jahrhundert die Neue Abteilung der Nationalgalerie beherbergte. In dieser weltweit ersten öffentlichen Sammlungen der künstlerischen Moderne wurden auch die Brücke Künstler erstmals museal ausgestellt – bis die Nationalsozialisten hunderte, vor allem expressionistische Kunstwerke als „entartet“ beschlagnahmten. Einige der in dieser Zeit diffamierten Werke gelangten über Umwege in das 30 Jahre später gegründete Brücke-Museum, das der gleichnamigen Künstlergruppe gewidmet ist.

Vor dem Hintergrund des von Russland entfesselten Krieges in der Ukraine begreift die von Katya Inozemtseva kuratierte Ausstellung die Vergangenheit als Kontinuität und Gegenwart.
