Small Editions is pleased to announce Painter Production Parity. The exhibition brings together a group of contemporary artists working on paintings with very different modes of production.
Siebren Versteeg’s procedurally-generated Abstract Expressionist paintings use an algorithm written by the artist to autonomously produce a growing body of work and then relates it to the world by running a reverse google image search to find the closest match. In Contrast, Joey Cocciardi’s paintings explore the role of “male artist” through a kind of extreme Plein Air painting by creating all terrain canvases that he packs into the wilderness and gesturally paints. Chris Oh’s Hyperrealistic paintings are virtually speed paintings. Though each is completed in only a short period of time, they take on an otherworldly relationship to the visual experience.
The show’s title nods to the economic theory of Purchasing Power Parity (a great example is hosted on the Economist website called 'The Big Mac Index'), the notion that long term exchange rates should move closer to a rate that allows for equal prices of the same goods across economies. Painter Production Parity looks at three very different painting practices and questions the value of defining studio practice by production method.
