Downstairs

Klemm’s is pleased to present Oje Oje, Johannes Raimann’s (1992, Austria) first exhibition at the gallery.

Taking place at Klemm's Downstairs, Oje Oje foregrounds writing as both a technology and a means of negotiating power, history, and collective trauma. Focusing on cuneiform—the oldest known writing system—and the Epic of Gilgamesh, the exhibition traces how stories endure through catastrophe, carrying traces of power, destruction, and mortality across millennia.

In his works, Johannes Raimann explores how images and information are created, stored, and transmitted. Working primarily with photography, he engages with information technologies to reflect upon how they both shape and reflect societal and political structures. Raimann examines both the materiality and the internal logics that make images and digital information possible in the first place.

Oje Oje asks not only what survives and what gets lost, but what kinds of ruins we are building today, and what kinds of forces might wash them away. Addressing a broad span of epistemic apparatuses, from ancient tablets and archaeological ruins to digital archives and contemporary systems of storage.
