For his new solo exhibition at the gallery, Marchal Mithouard (Shaka) discards color - which has been so pivotal in his previous research - to propose powerful and moving monochromes, bordering on abstraction.

His large scenes are conceived as the expression of a new mythology, in which human figures struggle for their freedom, challenged by natural elements or supernatural creatures often symbolizing the excesses of modern societies.

At the heart of this turmoil, some portraits emerge as a sign of hope, such as that of Missak Manouchian, Armenian refugee and hero of French resistance. Marchal Mithouard's characteristic dessected and precise graphic style fully translates this chaotic tension.

In addition to the titanic work of composition in graphite, the artist adds metal inserts on some of the works, which he first cuts and engraves piece by piece in his studio. The refraction of metal answers to the mattness of the pencil, adding another dimension to the depths already at work in his drawing.

While he tightens the chromatic field (black and white) and the supports (works mainly made on paper), Marchal Mithouard reaches a precision which carries us with elegance and dexterity into a new epic in the heart of Human psyche.

Marchal Mithouard was born in 1975. He lives and works in Igny (91).

The artist have captured for over 15 years his contemporaries in their most characteristic expressions. He discovered spray paint in 1995 and soon his colorful cartoon-like portraits, covered the walls of his hometown Evry, under the name of Shaka. Lazarew Gallery was the first to organize a solo show by the artist in 2011. Since then, his work has been shown in New York, Miami, Berlin, Singapour, Amsterdam and other cities.

*****
