The basement, a subterranean site below the familiar space of dwelling, is the neglected space of the domestic. Among unused items, forgotten and collecting dust, are the invisible infrastructural supports of a home, the fuse boxes and water heaters. Orgy Park’s basement gallery serves as both literal and conceptual framework for the exhibition, emphasizing the basement’s role as a container for things kept out of view and as a metaphor for the recesses of the self.

No Soy Sincero presents works by Cristine Brache, Domingo Castillo, Jessica Gispert, Alan Gutierrez, and Hugo Montoya. The artists employ video, sculpture, photography, and drawings that at first appear quotidian, ordinary, and unassuming, but contain gestures that challenge our hyper-normalized reality--marked by a demand for tidy appearances and business as usual. The works, knowingly repurposing tropes of contemporary culture, grate against the bounds of a normative system whose functionality is predicated on one’s interior remaining concealed. The work reveals the messiness, violence, and exploitation that lies latent just below the surface, as well as the muckiness of self-disclosure.
