Housing is pleased to present Weight, the first exhibition in the Composition series, which seeks to explore the physical through a musical framework. The name Compositions speaks to the theory of placing together distinct but overlapping sounds—treble, alto, and bass—in order to maximize feeling, depth, and emotion. These frequencies do not represent hierarchies but intersectional vibrations. Thus, each exhibition in the series will bring together three artists with mirroring foundational concerns. Weight takes up the work of Sofia Moreno, Catalina Ouyang, and Calli Roche in order to investigate the phenomenology of mass. That is, each of the artists in Weight grapple with the way we experience and come to know bodies, shapes, densities, and materials. All of these artists work across multiple mediums and reconfigure objects in order to touch narrations of violence, sexuality, and fantasy.
Sofia Moreno was born and raised in Coahuila, Mexico. In 1994, she immigrated to the United States and lived in Dallas, Texas. She then moved to Chicago, where she attended The School at the Art Institute of Chicago. Sofia is a multimedia artist and her subjects include expressions of the sacred and profane, the body, sexuality, religion, and socio-political issues within contemporary culture. Moreno is currently working on the follow-up to the seven-year project, Porn Again.
Catalina Ouyang (b. 1993) currently lives and works in New York City. Their work spans across the mediums of sculpture, video, installations, and mixed media, often exploring themes of storytelling, the nature of narrative, and the limitations of language. Rather than engaging with language directly, Ouyang engages with the visualization, rhythm, and texture of language, which adds a unique dimensionality to their work. Ouyang’s works have an intentional, overt violence and sexuality to them, often containing phallic wooden spears or birth-like imagery made out of found objects. Ouyang received MFA from Yale University in 2019. They are represented by Lyles and King (NY) and Make Room (Los Angeles).
Calli Roche (b. 1999) is an American artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her current work is a material manifestation of internal diatribes; an attempt to instantiate stream of consciousness narratives and profound whims. Using personal and cultural histories both true and delusive, she creates artifacts to materialize inner monologues. Calli is the current recipient of the NYSC/NYFA.
