A working title is a temporary name given to a project while it is still in the process of becoming something else. In the age of accelerated culture and spectacle, that condition of being provisional increasingly describes the self as well. Internet culture, consumerism, and algorithmic media overwhelm many of the older signifiers through which people once understood themselves and one another. Identity becomes something continuously revised, performed and categorized.

Within this environment, the desire to truly know oneself becomes itself a pathology: an impossible project of self-definition that leaves the individual constantly grasping at straws of identities, aesthetics and subcultures presented through advertising and social media.

Working Title explores what it means to exist within this contemporary condition of one dimensionality and spectacle. The works in the exhibition considers the self not as something fixed or internally coherent, but as something perpetually under construction—a working title that may never become final.
