303 Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Larry Johnson featuring works spanning from the 1990s to the present.
A quintessentially Los Angeles artist, Larry Johnson's work investigates the tensions within American culture. His photo-based work employs cryptographic systems of communication relying on multi-entendre layers of image and text. Drawing from advertising, animation, and graphic design, Johnson reconfigures visual narratives that seem familiar into poignant and humorous commentaries on his own culture's exported ideologies and explores how popular history has influenced the materiality of language and images. From pre-digital paste ups to toile wallpaper, Johnson's stylishly impersonal surfaces obscure a universal pathos.
Larry Johnson (b. 1959, Long Beach, California) has been shown and is held in prominent institutions and collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and MAMCO, Geneva among others.
